Top Gun theme song now free for the rocking

No plans for the long July 4 weekend?

Don’t fret — or even better, do.

Instead of entering a 4G inverted negative dive with a MiG 28, drag your buddies into the living room for a “Guitar Hero” jam session with one of the classic military movie songs — the “Top Gun Anthem.”

In honor of the nation’s 232nd birthday, Activision will offer the Grammy-winning tune (written by Harold Faltermeyer, the guy who came up with the “Axel F” theme for “Beverly Hills Cop”) as a free download for “Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock.” The guitar heavy instrumental is available beginning Thursday.

Since your name ain’t the best in the Navy, take note: Side effects from rockin’ the “Top Gun Anthem” may include excessive high fives, overused movie lines and drunken group serenades using “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.”

Speaking of the pickup move that launched a million crash-and-burns, the San Diego restaurant where the famous serenade was filmed is now gone, gone, gone, gutted by a fire recently that spread from the kitchen, according to media reports. No one was injured, but the building was destroyed.
