OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Marine Corps officials on Monday identified the Marine found dead Saturday on Camp Pendleton as Sgt. Sean K. Webster.
Webster, 23, of Fairfax, Va., was an amphibious assault vehicle crewman and assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendleton, officials said in a statement.
His body was found in the 27 Area of Camp Pendleton. Officials said the incident is currently under investigation by Camp Pendleton officials and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
“The Marines and sailors of Camp Pendleton and Wounded Warrior Battalion West are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of Sgt. Webster,” they said in a statement.
Webster was featured in a June 20 article about the Wounded Warrior Battalion that was published in the North County Times newspaper.
In the article, the sergeant, who had endured 14 surgeries for wounds he suffered in a 2005 roadside bomb attack in Iraq, spoke about his goals to remain a Marine and help other wounded war veterans like himself. “I’m a wounded Marine and I know what these guys are going through,” he said in the article.
Webster enlisted in the Marines in 2002 and received the Purple Heart medal for wounds in combat in Iraq. Other personal awards include the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Service Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
