‘Glam God’ Vivica Fox gives her style sermon
With movies such as “Independence Day” and “Kill Bill Vol. 1” under her fashionable belt, Vivica Fox has become a pro at strutting the red carpet with style. Her new starring role is host of VH1’s “Glam God” (premiered Aug. 21, 10 p.m. ET/PT), in which Fox and celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch help 12 aspiring fashion stylists get ready for a career in Hollywood. Fox dished on her own style secrets:
Question: You’re getting ready for a trip to New York Fashion Week. Which shows will you make sure to see?
Answer: I have a passion for fashion, so I want to see a little of everyone. But I can’t do it all, so Baby Phat, Betsey Johnson and Marc Jacobs are must-sees. And I love Pamela Dennis and Herve Leger. I’m a curvy girl, so I like all those hot, sexy fashions.
Q: You use your “fashion passion” in “Glam God.” Tell us a little about the show.
A: Each week, we have our aspiring stylists compete in hot-trend challenges, dressing a Hollywood couple, a star for the MTV VMA awards, the next “it” girl. We teach them the ins and outs of Hollywood styling.
Q: Not everyone can wear the clothes that runway models wear. How do you translate fashions to the real world?
A: What the public needs to understand is that models are basically hangers for the clothes; you’re not supposed to notice the girls. So for everyone else, it’s less about the fashion than it is about what works for your body. Never force fashion, it never works.
I’m not a big risk taker. I prefer the classics. I never want to be on that ”What Was She Thinking“ page in magazines!
Q: Any advice on looking fashionable without breaking the bank?
A: There are lusts and there are musts. There are several lines that make great-looking stuff for cheap, like Jessica Simpson, Steve Madden and Victoria’s Secret.
But there are also a few items you should try to spend the money on, like shoes. There’s no sense in going to an event with cheap shoes because you’ll be uncomfortable. And spend the money on a great pair of boots in brown or black. You can wear them with just about anything.
Q: If you’re running late to an event, what’s your go-to outfit when you don’t have time to put an ensemble together?
A: I always grab a great handbag and a great pair of shoes. They can really dress up an outfit.
Q: Of course, the key to having great style is to feel good about yourself. What’s your secret to staying in shape?
A: Since all the sample sizes in fashion are size 6 and under, I like to stay lean and sculpted. I do a lot of cardio and lift light weights three to five times a week. I’m a low-carb girl; I stick with low sugar, meat and veggies. But I do allow a cheat day, which is when I eat pizza and pasta from California Pizza Kitchen. You have to have fun, too!
